FALL WEATHER PREPARATIONS

I know no one wants to think about the cold rainy months ahead of us. It is hard to believe that it is already September and fall is right around the corner. It seems like summer just began. Maybe it is because of the many years we all spent anticipating the beginning of the new school year, but September always makes me think of new beginnings. I look forward to the first aroma of smoke from a chimney and the sense of fresh starts that it brings to mind.

That being said, I am not looking forward to the cold rain that will soon follow. But this is the perfect time to start thinking ahead for the winter months. Now is the ideal time to start preparing your home. Here are just a few ideas for projects that would be good to add to your fall to do list:

  • Have your chimney swept and inspected.
  • Have your storm windows put back up. Trust me this is not something you will want to do when it is 30 degrees and raining.
  • Have your furnace serviced and change your filters.
  • Have frost free hose bibs installed.
  • Upgrade your exterior doors and windows to block out those chilly drafts.
  • Have your roof inspected and repaired.
  • Clean, repair or replace gutters and downspouts.
  • Have your mudroom areas upgraded and storage installed for all those wet clothes and muddy shoes.

SMALL SPACES

We all have small spaces in and around our homes that seem like wasted space. If you are like me and hate clutter, making these areas into storage or otherwise usable space is a great solution.

Finished basements and attics are prime spots in the home that have lots of nooks and cubbyholes. Often times there are hidden cavities in the main areas of the home too. Perhaps a chimney has been removed or corners of the room that are too small for a piece of furniture but could be best utilized by adding a built in cabinet. There are so many ways to make these small spaces work to our advantage. Here are just a few:

  • Recycling or trash storage
  • Built-in dressers or cabinets
  • Bookshelves
  • Office workstations
  • Filing cabinets
  • Seasonal item storage
  • Gardening tool storage
